Possible engine damage to JD40 crawler

Post by odinrp » Thu Feb 16, 2012 12:40 pm

My son was running the jd40 crawler. It uses oil and he did not check the oil. After about one hour he reported that the engine made a funny noise and then quit. He turned it off and summonded me. The oil dip stick did not register!. I added three quarts of oil and tried to start it, but it will not start, however it turns over. In order to fix does the enjine need to be pulled or can it be fixed on-site. What posible damage was done?
I need some advice on best way to address.
Thank you
Randy

I would pull the engine. But yes you can do a "inframe" repair if you had to.

you can do in frame unless you spun a main....or a rod then the crank has to come out ... if it was using that much oil you needed to pull it down anyway just now you will have more problems

Does it turn over freely? Does it build oil pressure when you crank it? It seems lack of lubrication caused a major failure but there is a chance it could be an unrelated issue.

Oil related engine stoppage almost always will require a rebuild. To prevent futher damage, I guess I would tear it down and fix the problem.

start with a basic health check. Check compression leak the cylinders down if you have access to a cylinder leak-down unit. remove the filter and inspect the cartridge for metal particles. It is also possible that with the lack of oil it stuck a valve causing a lack of compression.

More than likely it smeared a bore and can't compress the air fuel mixture. If you have access to a bore scope you can inspect the cylinders and see how they look.
