1961 1010 bulldozer
Hi all, i am new to this forum and after checking all the stuff out, seems to be alot of good info around here.
I have a question about the value of this crawler. I have a friend who i am looking at buying there 1961 JD 1010 bulldozer with gearmatic winch. has a model 62 blade on the front with a homemade cage built around the drivers seat. Couple of issues. Motor sounds good and runs strong but smokes alot even when running with rpms up. Right side track is on backwards and no idea why they would do that but tracks are really nice. Winch needs help, the whole braking system is gone and the only way to use the winch is as a yarder because you have to control it with the clutch pedal. It is in fair shape overall but needs some tlc. My gramp has a 420 crawler and were looking to move up in size. They are asking $3500 for the bulldozer and i was wondering if that was a fair price? Any help would be much appreciated because i am not too familiar with the 1010.

you can plan on a $1000 or more into the winch and could easily be as much into the engine, depending on what is wrong. I just did the engine last winter on my 1010 and the winch the winter before.
where in upstate NY are you? I am located in Carthage.

cat10til2: I am located above lake george. How available are parts for the gearmatic winches?
Thanks for the info!
Does it use oil or water??
sounds like its running rich (adjust the main jet) and sucking a little oil...... personally for me if it don't have a reverser ( still unknown at least to me) and the fact its gas i would say 2000/2500
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper
I got lucky with my winch. I needed the bands relined and a set of seals for the controls. I found the seals on ebay and sent the bands to the west coast for relining. I can look for the receipt this weekend and send you the information if you want. I don't remember the name of the company off the top of my head, but should have it at home somewhere.57JD420C wrote:jtrichard: It is gas with 4 forward gears and reverse located on the dash. Re: 1961 1010 bulldozer
That price sounds a bit high to me for this area - but I haven't seen the machine. At least I don't THINK I've seen it. I did look at a 1010 with a 62 dozer on it a year or so ago, along with a straight 450 - all near Lake George. I bought some used Allis HD4 rollers from the old guy an his son.57JD420C wrote: I have a friend who i am looking at buying there 1961 JD 1010 bulldozer with gearmatic winch. has a model 62 blade on the front with a homemade cage built around the drivers seat.

I've passed up a few 1010s in the southern Adirondacks/Albay area that ran but were very beat for $2000-$2500. Also seen quite a few 350s with hydraulic 6-way blades for $3200 - $4000 - again . . . very beat.
Nothing wrong with a 1010 except for poor parts availability as compared to other Deere machines. Some people favor it over the 350 because it's lighter and easier to trailer.
If you buy it and find yourself needing used parts - the tractor salvage yard 20 miles from me has over a dozen 1010 crawlers in the yard. McFaddens in Sharon Springs, NY. 100 miles from Indian lake/North Creek, Adirondacks - not sure how may mile to Lake George.
I saw a running 1010 and a running 350 get brought into the local scrapyard last week in Oneonta (Otsego County). They sold for scrap price! What a waste. I'd of gladly paid more - but once they come over the scale - the scrapyard owner won't sell to the public. They were torching apart a nice looking 440 Deere crawler when I was there.
