Frozen Hydraulic Cylinder on 62 Blade-Any Hope?

Post by hydrogeo » Fri Apr 20, 2012 11:26 am

A friend gave me a really nice 62 blade with all of the hardware for my 40c. I was hoping to replace the Frankenstein looking deal I have now. My current blade is a perfect example of why coat hangers do not make for good filler rod.

I started getting ready for the swap and discovered that one of the hydraulic cylinders is frozen in about the middle of the stroke. It looks like somewhere along the line somebody took the hydraulic lines off and water got down the hydraulic ports. I tapped on the end with a 3lb sledge and it is locked tight. The other cylinder moves freely by hand. The paint matches the blade, so I assume these are the OEM cylinders.

Any chance this cylinder can be salvaged? If so what is the best way to go about it? Hook it up to the remotes on my tractor and put some hydro pressure on it (from a safe distance)? The throw it in the mud for a week trick? The two good cylinders on my existing blade are too short to use, and otherwise I'll have to wait until the money tree blossoms to get a couple new cylinders.

Nope its toast. you could salvage parts and pieces, yet the cost of rebuild is about the cost to replace. I suggest if it is a common cylinder that you visit your local Tractor Supply (if you have one). Or go online with either

NH Northern Tool and Equipment

Or Bailey Hydraulics if you have some weird size.

Another possibility (very hit and miss) a salvage company of sorts.

I would pressurize it and try it, you are out nothing. There is no replacement cylinder, so you will need to fix what you have one way or the other.

I threw a pipe wrench on the end and got it to twist. I am going to soak ot overnight in ATF and see what tommorrow brings. I did not think of Surplus Center. I will see if they have anything close. Trator Supply doesnt stock anything close. Northern has one I will could make work for around $200, but I would want a matching pair..

Salvage yard may have one....

A buisness close to me is called Grease Monkey.
They are very reasonable with these type of repairs.

Keep an eye on Craigslist. There are people parting out machines in our neck of the woods and you might find what you need. Hopefully yours will surrender to your efforts.

I'd hook the hydro up and try to push the ram out of the cylinder. You may be able to put a seal kit in it and lightly hone the inside of the cylinder to get ride of rust and the thing may work great.
What is the condition of the chroming on the ram?

Well, did some diagnosis work. Here is what I found:

Rod looks great:

Packing looks, well, OK

Cylinder bore is down-right ugly

I whipped up a long shaft for my cylinder hone and cleaned it up.

I could hone it for a week and would not be close to getting all the pitting out. I am going to clean it up as best as I can and throw it back together. It should work for a bit, but I doubt it is going to hold up for long. Will start saving pennies for a new pair of cylinders. Oh, well, cost of a couple of cylinders is not bad considering how nice blade setup will be.

Save some time and get a new tube from Baileys. They sell just the tube if that's all you need.

There are no new cylinders, you would have to cobble something and/or butcher the blade to use something else. Buy a new tube as was suggested, put in new packings, you are done for a long time.

Didn't know anyone carried just the tubes, thanks:D . I was going to cobble up something, but I not looking forward to butchering the blade mounts.

Your situation should be even easier now that you have every thing apart.
