Would like to replace cyl block on 1010

Post by grappleloader » Wed May 09, 2012 7:40 pm

I would llike to replace the cyl block because upon disassembly it looked like the block had been froze up. There are cracks between every cylinder and down through two of the main bearing webs. The former owner had made a patch. A good block may be hard to find, but is of course the best repair. If need be ,I may be able to find some one to repair it, but is in bad shape. 1010 serial 52163 and block casting no. T17513T and it is a diesel.

I doubt there is any good fix for the cracks by the mains. I know where there are several of those diesel 144 engines in junkyards. But - how would you know if they are cracked or not? Smiley's in Schoharie County NY has many of them. So does MacFaddens - also in Schoharie County.

I wonder how different the 2010 gas engine block is? Same size at a 1010 diesel at 144 cubic iinches. I never paid close attention to the differences between the 1010 diesel 144 and 2010 gas 144 except I know the sleeves are the same. Some companies use the same blocks for gas or diesel and some do not. Seems the mounting area for the injection pump versus distrbutor would differ unless some sort of adapter is used. I mention the gas 2010 144 engine because they are more common - especially from combines.

I had a similar issue with an IH B275 diesel awhile back. 144 diesel with many cracks in the main-bearing webs. I search all over and finally found one only 20 miles from me at MacFaddens tractor salvage yard. I paid $1000 for that block. It had a Central Tractor part # on it as a "rebuilt" unit. Got it home and discovered it too was cracked at the mains but was welded and bondo was put on to hide the repair. After a lot of complaining I got $500 back and kept the engine. Still running it. I never DID find a good not-cracked block.

Hi grappleloader,

I posted that a while ago:

The old Fred has 3 1010 engine (2diesel and 1 gas) if my memory is good. It's located in Matane, Quebec.

I think gas block is 3 mains, diesel is 5 mains, but I could be wrong.

You may be 100% correct. I'm just too lazy to look up parts in the book and my memory is a little foggy on the subject.
