My 2010 steering thread

Post by magnus » Wed Jun 06, 2012 3:14 pm

Hey I also seem to be in the bad steering club.

History I picked up the 2010 pretty reasonable but not running. It had sat a couple years and the last person to have it had passed away. The person selling it thought thought it was just a bad starter.

So now I've gotten the starter rebuilt, rebuilt the carb and cleaned out the gas tank and lines. It now drives in nice strait lines.

So I downloaded my service manual and started working on adjusting.

The right side steering lever was already bottomed out and the pivot point (large nut) was seized in the actuator. There where a couple inches of play before the throwout contacted.

I also have a lot of slop in the right handle it moves in and out about 1/4" side play.

I figured I'd take them in as far as I could and try to follow the brake adjustment. Had some time to waste but not enough to get the tops off and into the clutch, or enough to try and detrack it.

There was one part that confused me on the brake adjust...

With pedal back against stop.. Does that mean stopped bottomed out, or all the way up?

And DAMN that left pin is a bitch to get to and or put back in. Dropped it at least 5 times into the frame. I'm going to have to enlist my infant daughter to get her little arms in there because my hands and arms don't fit.

Ok I got the top off the right side. Got the break band undone. Still have the track on. I tried getting it with a driver I had, but no luck.

Getting someone to check it out this afternoon. He's actually done the job and I may just hire it out. I don't have the tools or space to do it at this time.
