looking for detailed information for restoration projects

Post by dnkcozmo » Thu Jul 26, 2012 8:09 pm

hey guys,I am looking for some detailed information for restoring a 420c mc and 40c. I own all 3 and want to do it right. I am looking for detailed information on mainly painting and decals. I want these things to look just like they did when rolled off of the line. For example were the carbs painted? if so what color. Where the tracks painted which i think they were. How was the wiring harness ran, how about the hydraulic line for the blade. I have search high and low and have not come up with these things. I can look at many restore pics on the net, but everyone does it a little different. so need to know how they were when they rolled off the line. thanks for the help in advance...

You mean this for the wiring? For the 420c (came from the big shop manual, Lavoy can sell you one with lots of other help you asked for).

No engineering prints available that I know of.
Tracks are the same color as the chassis, green if green, ind yellow if ind yellow.
Carb is chassis color.
Decal placement can be seen in the service manual.

well if there are no engineering prints avaliable, are there any books out there that give detailed information. I look at so many pics out there of restored crawlers and they have all been restored a little different. I know that books like this are avaliable for other older tractors, but cant find any for crawlers. what are your thoughts?

Only pictures I have seen are the ones that come in the manual. Perhaps the brochure can shed some light on what you seek. I have one for my 60, it isnt perfect yet it gives what John Deere felt was correct?

Maybe I need to change my attire to what is in the photo when at parades?

I would trust none of the books that are published for the most part, they are only concerned with selling books, not accuracy.
If you have a question, ask it here, someone will know the answer.

Willyr, I suspect most people at the parades, myself included, would just be glad you have clothes on. LOL

I knew JR personally for many years, he passed away a few years ago. As far as accuracy, his stuff is the best in the business. I caught him on a couple of small crawler errors, but he was the first to admit he was not a crawler guy.
Lots of pics in his book, and lots of descriptions as well as full serial number charts. The Little Giants is the one to get, but has been out of print for years. Search the internet and you might come up with a copy, but I don't think they are cheap.

Lavoy maybe you should write a book for us all :D
This info would be great, but I think it would be very difficult. There were so many changes throughout the years.
Take the "Deere" sticker on the back of the 440 seat. Mine has the "leaping deere" I've saw many that just say "John Deere"
It would be great if someone would remake the decals for these too. Esp. the small ones like the injector caution for the diesel 440, the air cleaner ones, pto caution ones.
When I sanded my hood I noticed very faintly that the fuel door looked like it had lettering that said "FUEL," I couldn't see any lettering on the water and hydro doors. Anyone know if they should say anything?

No lettering on any of the doors, including fuel, someone added that after it left the factory.
Travis Jorde has pretty much all of the decals, and can make whatever he doesn't have.
Decal placement is one of the many reasons I got into collecting literature and such. Once you have enough of these types of information, you can pretty much see where everything goes. You can also look in the back of the parts books, they show pretty much every decal individually, that will give you an idea of what you shouls have had.

I'd recommend Travis Jorde.
Thanks for the contact Lavoy, I emailed them about the "Fuel Injector Caution" decal and they have them, I'm amazed.
Good luck on your search dnk, and post of pics or anything you find for the rest of us
