chain big or small? what is right on an mc???

Post by dnkcozmo » Sun Aug 26, 2012 8:20 pm

ok so i have looked at several crawlers and actually own 3 myself, and am still confused about one thing.... Why is it that some of the mc's have the smaller chains on them with the thinner steel pads and some have the heavier chain with the heavier pads. i was under the impression that the 40c and the mc had interchangeable tracks, and i own a 40 and the chain is heavier with bigger pins and bushings. it actually has the same pins and bushings as my 420 just not as many links which would make since because my 420 is a 5 roller. so my questions is which one goes on the mc because i have seen a lot of mc's with the heavier links on them and the sprockets appear to be the same on the back. I also know for certain that my sprockets are the same on my mc and 40 because i have counted teeth on them. what is right and what is wrong here???

ALL BO Lindeman, MC, and 40 use the same links. BO Lindeman and almost all MC use the same pads. Very late MC through 440 use the same pads.
Someone has put 420 chains on your 40, you see it from time to time.

so is it ok that that some of the mc's that i have seen have the heavier chains on them which are the same ones that i see on my 420 and 40? is it also ok to put the heavier pads on the mc and 40. the ones on my mc are worn and you can tell have cracked and have been welded. will it hurt anything to run the heavier chain? i also see a lot of used chaings that our worn on the bottom and the wear is so severe that it have gotten into the bottom of the pin. with those worn links i think that it would be pointless to change the pics and bushings. the rollers dont appear to be bad on the chains that i have seen on those worn chains. It is just confusing to me that the chains are smaller but i have seen quite a few mc's with the heavier chains. so not even the later mc's had the heavier chain??????

Nope, MC never had 420 chain. The very last MC's built, somewhere in the 19,000 serial number range came with 40 pads.

so lavory what is your opinion on the worn links that i have described on my last post?? also i am sorry for being so annoying with all of these questions, but i want to get this right so my question is can the 420 pads go on the 40 chain or was a 40 suppose to have the thinner steel pads that came on a mc or bo? let me know your thoughts and thanks for the help

Do you mean the links are worn, or the bushings are worn through to the pin? If it is the bushing worn, tracks may be able to be rebushed.
Pads were dependant on the crawler, not the chain. Same pad was used on the last of the MC's through the 440. MC and 40 use the same chain, but most MC's used a different pad from the factory. You will see lots of MC's with the later pads as they work just fine, just are not correct from a purist or restoration standpoint.

what i mean is that the bottom of the link is worn not from the bushing but the bottom is worn. i have seen several this way. the wear is so bad at times that the side of the link is worn into the bushing and pin

Still don't understand what you mean. I can't think of any way it is possible for the link to be worn down to the bushing. Occasionally the outside of the link are the pin, known as the pin boss will get worn to the point the ends of the pins wear. This is due to shot rollers, and or worn rails.

Good tool carriers are real hard to find, most are broken up and welded a lot. I have only one left complete, only one I have had for a long time.
