tranny case trouble

Post by 57jd420 » Fri Sep 28, 2012 10:53 pm

so we start tearing into the crawler and realize that the back right hand side of the tranny case was broken and very poorly rewelded. they put some pieces of flat bar inside and then tried to weld it in from the top. the rear plate was also cracked and rewelded. So what is the general opinion, try to replace the tranny case while its tore down?? Also the pinion gear has some small chips out of it. would you guys recommend replacing it?

Definitely replace the case if you are that far. Ring and pinion probably, hard to tell without seeing it.

i would definately feel better with a new case in there. would it be okay to only replace the pinion gear?? i checked the ring gear out and it looks prefect.

another question.... when i was breaking the tracks yesterday and trying to get the king pin in the right spot both tracks were spinning even with the crawler in neutral, both tranny and reverser. no clutch or motor in it. i wasnt sure if this was normal or if i had some more underlying problems.

I think it would be in your best interest to replace the broken case.
As far as both tracks spinning, that should be normal, if your spinning from the sprockets.
This is because your turning through the ring and pinion, the only way to stop one side from spinning would be to pull that sides steering clutch lever.

Thank you Ben for the input. I was thinking both tracks turning but just wanted to ask. We are going to replace the case and pinion gear.... hoping we can find replacements at a reasonable cost.

my trans case has a casting number of M4002T. will a M4005T work?? what are the differences? I know the 5T case was the eariler version pretty sure it ended with 100000. The S/N on my crawler is 118072.

No, they will not interchange. I should have a case on hand.
