Used to be that the new ones were about $70, so who cares. But now when they are approaching $175, you just as well rebuild the one you have for a little more. Plus, if you are doing a complete resto, you can have them reset the hours to zero.

Speaking of tachs, does anyone have a picture of the dash of a 420C? I've got a tach, temp and amp but there's three smaller holes at the top. What are these for? Also, there's a "D" and "G" cast in above the choke. What is this?
A good picture of the dash sure would help.

If I'm not mistaken the holes are for key switch, fuse, and cigar lighter.
I have the wrong dash in our 420 so I'm not 100% sure. I 'll look at the books in the shop today and make sure.

Center hole in top is for dash light, other two are for key switch, and cigarette lighter.
D stands for distallate, G stands for gas, it is where the fuel selector rod goes on an all-fuel.

Well I got the estimate back on rebuilding 3 tachs and one hour meter, are you ready for this, $1,860. YES that is a comma, not a decimal point. ONE THOUSAND, EIGHT HUNDRED SIXTY AMERICAN DOLLARS. In case you are wondering, NO I did not tell him to go ahead. Guess I will go to plan B.

Thanks for the dash layout info. Wasn't the keyswitch an option? If it was, did JD just put a plug in the hole? Also, does anyone know where to get a dash light? Original or Repro?

Switch was an option, if you did not have it, then a plug goes in the hole. I have repro dash light for about $35, would need to double check, but should have one on hand.

Lavoy,
Did you remember to tell them you didn't need the gold plating option?!!

For that price, I was assuming that was gold plated, with diamonds on the indicator needle, and a ruby every hundered RPM on the face. I understand that nothing is free, but that is double what I know I can get it done for elsewhere.

I had a tach worked on by a guy I take my starter and generators to. He pulled the glass of and cleaned the face of it and got it working again. He did a nice job shining it up without having to repaint it. He was also able to build a new cable for me and check it. I am thinking about laser cutting a template for the face of my tach to repaint the numbers on it. If any one is interested I can give you his number or send you a picture of the tach he did for me.
I also saw that someone asked about a Stewart Warner cable, I believe that was the original equipment manufacturer.

Tach cables are no problem, I have new ones for about $25.
