Hello,
I am curious what a 2-53 Diesel motor, in unknown, but complete (as far as I know) condition is worth? Also a 831 loader? I have no experience with either of these two items and therefore no idea what they are worth. I am planning to sell them. If you would like to see pictures, look here:

This crawler is no longer sitting in the trees, as I have hauled it home. I was pleasantly surprised to find the tracks not stuck and it even steered a little as we were pulling it out. I am considering selling the whole crawler as is, minus the winch.

Are you selling the whole machine or the loader and engine seperate? With the hood, grill, and skid plates off, I would guess something went bad on the engine.There doesn't look to be much adjustment left on the tracks and that means probably pins/bushings quite worn and good chance the same for the rollers. Unless it can be started and moved on it's own power, I would price it for a parts machine. If I were to want it, I would only offer $1000.00. The winch may not work due to hydraulic problems and rust inside also. Sorry--just my opinion. gregjo1948

At this point I am planning to get rid of the loader and engine seperate. Then I will decide what to do with the rest of the machine. If you are planning to swap the diesel engine for a gas engine, you want to take note of the different other components that will be impacted by the change. Things you may have thought about like the starter, air cleaner, exhaust, etc; but also less obvious things like the hood, radiator, hydraulics, etc. You may want to print off pages of the parts manuals and compare where part numbers are different. A different number means a different part.
Ideally you could buy a second gas crawler with a good engine and then you would be sure to have all the small parts and pieces you need to do the conversion. Then sell the stuff that is left over after combining the two crawlers. Gil

Great points, and likely the reason the hood was off when he found it.
The gas hood would not fit so they just left it off once they swapped in the DD engine.

My thoughts as well. The hood and belly pan were found in a different location from the remainder of the crawler. I believe they were simply left off after the conversion. I did remove the "Folgers intake and concrete hurricane proof cap" from the air intake expecting to see a large nest of some kind, but was pleased to see it looked pretty clean.JD440ICD2006 wrote:Gil,

Finally got this machine moved indoors and started playing around a bit. I am trying to verify if the motor is stuck. I pulled the starter, replaced the solenoid, hooked up a battery, got it to engage and spin, then reinstalled. However it would not roll the motor over. I then put a wrench on the front of the crank and was able to get the motor to move, but it will only turn about a 1/4 revolution before it stops, I don't want to force it and damage something. I am new to the GM diesel, and don't know much about it. Do any of you diesel guys have suggestions on what my next step should be to get this thing freed up and rolling over. I am not trying to start it yet, just get it freed up.

I'd say it might be a stuck valve or even something lodged in the blower. Since everything is gear driven, if something got down in the blower lobes it would bind things up.
If it was a stuck piston I don't think you'd be able to roll it much at all.
I will say, you need a very good battery. When I first tried to start mine it did what you're describing; starter spun free out of the crawler, but when bolted up it would just click. Put a new battery on and it spun over like brand new. The old battery would start an old Farmall C, but wouldn't budge the 2-53.
