YES, now for the long answer, all these reversers were internally identical.
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

Hi,

The early 440 used the same bellhousing, reverser and transmission as the late 420 and the 430. The late 440 had a larger transmission housing, and I think the reverser housing changed with it (I don't have my parts catalogs handy to look it up). As noted, the internals were the same.

Also, on the 440, IIRC, the non reverser units used the reverser housing with just a shaft inside. This, opposed to the 420 and 430 which had a center frame with integral bell housing if not equipped with a differential type reverser.

So, to add a reverser from a 440 to a 420 you need the bell housing and reverser from an early 440 and swap those in place of the center frame. Plus, you need to find the 420 lever, which won't be on the 440 (using a dash lever and linkage in place of the long side lever).

There is also a gear-type reverser on the early 420, which is different from the later differential-type. There were changes to the transmission on the 420 when they changed reverser types, so I think you first need to know which phase 420 you have before running out grabbing up 440 reverser parts.

The 430 and early 440 coincide with everything, so one will have an easier time with a 430. Not so many 'gotchas'...

Hi,

448,001. This was when the 2-53 Diesel came into the picture, and the gas engine was tweaked up 10% more as well.

Oh, and the 420 did not get the differential reverser until 131,309 and it only goes with the 5-speed trans, IIRC.
