Hi,
Odds are pretty good. A 2-cycle will run either way. The blower sucks almost as well as it blows. Exhaust heat not good for the blower, though, so good thing you shut it right down.

well folks here is the result.
We cleaned and inspected all the fuel line, checked the air filter and pulled the blower and made sure it was ok. it checked out fine. 80It was cold and we decided to put the tiger torch under the beast and heat it up, before trying to start it. We had the valve cover off, as we were going to purge the injectors and had been cleaning the fuel lines in there. We noticed that smoke was rising up thru the holes in the casting that the oil drains thru. We thought that was odd, so I climbed under the beast and noticed that the plug in the oil pan had rattled out. Put new plug in and like magic the engine runs fine. We didn't see the oil that had drained out, due to deep snow and logging slash all mixed together. Now I know the machine rattles lots, I am always tightening bolts that rattle loose. Note to self now is to crawl under and check to drain plug. Lucky for me I am only 5foot 7 inches and 160 lbs. My helper is 6 foot 3 and 280 and he don't fit as easy.

With all of this you never checked the OIL? Hope you have not wiped the bottom end out..... I would pull the pan and check rod and main bearings before you wipe out the crank and/or rods

Hi,
Ye Gods! It stalled out due to no oil?! The bottom end has to be damaged, getting that tight.
Explains the black smoke out the stack. The governor trying to make it spin faster when the friction wanted to slow it down....

Might want to fix the oil pressure gauge as well!

unfortunately, oil pressure gauge has always been broken. The engine runs fine, fired right up and put in a good 6 hour shift pulling logs and pushing debris all over. another 440 Never thought of checking the oil, as I had filled the oil only 2 hours before the problem occurred.
I was surprised that the engine was ok, still powerful, and no black smoke, unless under load, which it was as in the past. However, saying this, nock on wood, I was able purchase another 440 icd for parts and it has a motor as a spare.
A new oil pressure unit is being installed today

Most likely the rod bearings have welded to the crank and are now spinning in the rod it WONT last long .....No telling what kind of damage it will do when it decides to cut loose ( it wont be pretty )

Hi,
If you don't develop a knock...and it won't be wood that knocks...consider that you sucked all the luck out of today (St Patty's Day)!!
Oh, and do fix the oil pressure gauge. If only one gauge works on anything, make it be the oil pressure one!
As far as how it might fail...I had all manner of such failures when racing. From holes poked thru the block, to piston and rod punching holes thru the head, to the entire insides of the engine coming apart in little pieces taking the oil pan right off in a big swoosh.
All of which I refer to as 'catastrophic self-disassembly'. Sometimes right at the end going for the checkered flag first. Also known as Stand On It And Steer or Go Till It Blows. But, then, it is well known why that red line is there and what is likely to happen when one goes well past it.
But this kind of thing ought never happen to a machine....
