1010 transmission issue
1010 transmission issue
Did some work to my 1010 loader at the shop. It sat for a couple weeks with the footbrake set. Drove it 100yds to the back yard with the footbrake set. Started moving a pile of topsoil; easy work using 1st gear and the reverser. Part way into this I realize the brake is still set and release it. After a little more back and forth moving the dirt, I reverse into a nearby pile of bank run gravel so the left rear side of the final drive is climbing the pile a LITTLE and the rest of the machine is level. Throw the reverser to move forward and the machine won't move. I can't get it out of first gear. It's totally bound up. Reverse, forward, reverse, forward - it won't move. Howls like I'm torturing it. I try working the foot brake and steering levers - no good, it's bound. Finally I get it out of 1st and try 2nd. Same thing. So I try third and it whizzes forward and back like nothing's wrong. Fourth gear same thing - no problem. 1st, 2nd and reverse gear, it's bound up - barely moves. Third and fourth? No problem. Have I got a broken jackshaft in the transmission?

Odd, shouldn't be that much difference. I would pull the top cover, look at the gears, and wiggle the shafts to check for bearing play.

Fired up the 1010 yesterday - now the transmission works manually but the reverser causes howling and binding in the tranny. I used the machine for a couple hours moving dirt piles around in my "sandbox". It pushes and backdrags great. Tranny howls with a bearing noise in 1st and 2nd when it's freewheeling with no load. Got it in the shop today. Trans oil is MOCHA colored. I haven't changed in a few years but then I don't use it much. I'm in shock ... it didn't show up mocha colored on the stick when I check it. I'm going to run the tranny for an hour with tractor fluid and change that - maybe run it again until I don't get mocha colored oil out of it. I can't remember what I'm supposed to be using for trans oil... but trac fluid should do for cleaning purposes while I pray. !!

Took the top off the tranny - very bad - input jack shaft moves around - roller bearing at the front of the shaft is halfway out of its outer race (see picture). My problem is how to break Berco track chains. I've got a nice shop but can't move the master pin no matter how much I heat and beat. I feel like cutting the chain like we did "in the old days" and welding it back together. So now I have 2 1010's with bad transmissions and steering clutches but nice motors and bottoms.
Here are two pictures. You can see the input shaft bearing half out of its cone... and in the second picture, I've pushed it back where it belongs.

You have a transmission rebuild in your future if:
1. Gear oil drained out is mocha-colored.
2. You remove the shifter, stick a magnet in the bottom of the case and come up with rollers, parts of cages and other suspicious looking bits of steel.
3. The input shaft moves around when you grab it.

I popped the drain plugs on my other 1010 today. It's been sitting under a tarp in my yard for a couple of years. About a cup of clear drinking water came out of the transmission, followed by some mocha tranny oil. The reverser had zero water in its bottom, just lovely tractor fluid. The oil pan had a quart of bright green antifreeze come out before any oil at all. I'll post this problem separately under "1010 diesel engine issue". This is a trick I've read about. Before starting a machine that's been sitting for a season, get under it and drain water from all the cases. I drilled a hole in the very bottom of my Massey Ferguson tractor tranny case just so I could do this. Also, the problem with wearing ear protection all the time is that (surprise!) you can't hear howling bearings. I know my ear protection played a role in losing my 1010 tranny. The other thing is skid plates. It's a pain in the neck to remove skid plates to drain reverser and transmission fluids ...so I avoided it. And it cost me a transmission.

Easiest thing to do for hard to reach drain plugs is put an elbow in the drain hole, and run a short length of hyd hose to the back of the pan.
