440 late model icd final drive
Hello Lavoy.
took the right side final drive off yesterday.
there was no power to that track.
haven't got to look it over to much yet, But I do notice, lots and lots of oil.
All over everything.
could this be the power issue to that side?
Do I need to take the center case apart???? ring gear, pinion??????
Also do I have to take both final drives off to check out the ring gear ad all that stuff? it looks like its in the transmission housing.???????
how do I get to that stuf??????
thanks much

Scott~
You should be able to view the ring gear by going through the rear cover. Should be 10 bolts. This will be the cover that holds the PTO if your crawler is so equiped. Mine has just a flat piece of steel someone made for it so it's super easy. Anyways, just pull that cover and the whole carrier and ring and pinion will be there. Not sure what it will take if you have a 3 pt and a pto since I don't have either.
The oil on the clutch will deffinately cause the power loss though.

rear cover?
Ok,
There are a couple rear covers on the back of the tractor.
Are those it? I think they are round.
How do I take these gears out and also replace the seals in the tractor side? not the final drive side.
Do I have to take the trani off and apart to do this?
I only have one final drive off right now.
And will the oil make it completely stop as far as the trac turning?
thanks for the help.

to replace the ring gear shaft seals , i think you can remove the final drive throw out bearing thrust plate, like 4 7/8' bolts and get to the seals that way.
Also check bull gear and shaft splines, did brake on that side work?

FINAL DRIVE
Nope,
Have to have get my brakes re-lined.
I will be looking it over this weekend.
so what your saying is I might be able to do that through the final drive housing??
thanks

yeah i think you can change the ring gear shaft seal without dissasembling the entire rear end, also be sure to change tour pinion shaft seal , as it is isually the culprit.
Just looking at the parts book shows a seal behind the "Quill" it is a round plate behind the steering throw out bearing. book shows it coming off and a bearing and seal behind it.want a scan copy of breakdown pic?
seems like it would be a REALLY stupid design flaw to have to dissassemble and entire machine to replace seals.
