Reverser

Post by steamfitter99 » Sat Apr 07, 2007 5:21 pm

I would like to know if it is as simple to rebuild the clutch packs of a 440 reverser as the manual makes it sound. Does just the front clutch pack come out by itself or does the differential have to come out as well. I will take pictures of this when I get to it. Thanks, Tom.

To rebuild the reverser, the entire center section must be removed from the crawler. The rear clutch pack is held in by a large nut between the reverser and trans.

I've got mine all apart and am working on the spider gears and some bearings, the clutch doesn't seem difficult there is a front and rear clutch pack and as lavoy said a large nut that holds the one side, Wasn't bad tearing it apart, just might get a little pricey if you have to replace all the clutch disks can't imagine there cheap since nothing on John Deere is

Good Luck let us know how it goes.

Hi,

Yeah, it's a pretty common problem. The sad part is that it doesn't have to be, since it's usually operator error that causes the problems.

You simply *have* to have the machine stopped dead *before* moving the reverser lever.

The other main source of reverser fault is not keeping the clutch packs adjusted properly.

tod,
They must still be available, the dealer just re-built my 440 reverser (or so they said they did - see my recent topic)
They charged me for clutch packs, so you should be able to get them.
As far as pulling the reverser, if you have any questions, ask away, I will try to help, I have pulled mine twice now, and headed for #3. The red part on the floor is the lil monster!

There is a note in the book about lining the oil hole up with something as I remember. I rebuilt one about 5 yrs. ago and had around a $1000 in parts.

Hope the clutches are still available cause I have two to rebuild. So far
all the bearings could be had from mother Deere. The oil hole in the rear
needle bearing has to line up with the oil hole in the rear hub.You will
know which bearing to install because it is the only one with a hole in
the outer shell.JimAnderson

Tod,
No problem, let us know if you have any questions. That picture will hopefully help someone who thinks that it is too big a job to tackle. Big job yes, but it is very doable. These tractors are not nearly as complex as you averave modern car. Bonus is nothing is metric!

Posting pictures is fairly easy, just look here: http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... c.php?t=45
