420 Engine and Winch

Post by jd440 » Fri May 25, 2007 10:03 am

Hello,

I am looking for a spare engine for my 440IC and I found a 420 engine which Lavoy says should fit (earlier post). The engine has been out of the crawler for a few years but looks in good shape.

Any suggestions on what I can do to test the engine before it goes in my crawler? It does not have a carburetor or generator with it.

Also, anyone have any idea about what it is worth?

The engine is painted green, does this mean it may be out of a farm tractor?

The seller also has a winch off the 420. Any guesses on what it may be worth?

Thanks,

Derek

Derek,
I don't remember the post, but make sure that the engine has the RH dipstick or you will have to cut a hole in the hood.
Not much you can tell on a non-running engine other than pull the head and look at the bores.

On the winch it can vary in value. If the seller will let you take the side plate off to see what the brake and every thing elese looks like in there it would help you decide what it is worth. I have one that I have about $600 in after paying $400 and still not done but the guy wouldn't let me take the side plate off before buying and it was a mess in there. I wouldn't have bought it if I would have seen it first.

Thanks Howard,

I'll definitely have a look behind the side plate on the winch or no deal.

I did find a JD 420 engine on Ebay for $250. However, it doesn't look as good as the one I found. But you never know what's inside until you look.

Here's the Ebay engine link:http://cgi.ebay.com/John-Deere-420-330- ... dZViewItem

Derek,
No dipstick, so to make it work, you will have to cut a hole in the hood to put oil in.
