how to chain up a dozer blade
how to chain up a dozer blade
I've prepared a place for the 1010C dozer to reside and trying to plan how to unload it. Problem one is keeping the blade up since it doesn't run. The only pace I can see chaining onto it is at the end of the lifting ram and then to the rear of the machine. How is it normally done?

I do not know what kind of blade you have on the 1010C but you might look at the cylinders that lift the blade, if they extend to lift it you might be able to clamp a piece of angle iron or U shaped metal to the rod of the cylinder to keep it from retracting and hold the blade up. That may be out of the way better than chains. Make sure it is safely clamped and cannot fall out.

Re: how to chain up a dozer blade
The rams lift the blade by contracting so clamping the rod would not lock it in the up position.

In an earlier post you mentioned that the tilt cylinder was incomplete. Your best bet is to pull it backwards. If you need to go forward put two pipes (like 2 3/8" oil field tubing) under the blade.

Re: how to chain up a dozer blade
If you can get the pins out of the blade lift cylinder(s), you can remove the cylinder(s), put the pins back in, jack the blade up and use a chain (run in a loop) between the pins (on one or both sides) in place of the cylinder(s) to hold the blade up.
Re: how to chain up a dozer blade
Moving backwards cannot be done. It is on a trailer with a one foot high railing and was placed on the trailer by backing under it while two forklifts held it suspended by the tracks (I hope that didn't screw something up) and the blade is a couple inches wider than the railing and is at the rear of the trailer. I'd post a picture but haven't been set up for that yet.
I was thinking about using my wife's B&S power wood splitter as a mule for the blade but know better than doing anything more than thinking about it. Besides, the fitting sizes wouldn't match and I'd have to cobble up hoses and that would complicate things.
Having just moved from Washington, I don't have my project materials anymore so I'll have to look for a source for materials for a rail for the blade to slide on or see if I can pull the ram pins. I couldn't see how to secure a chain on the arm the ram attaches to. Pulling the pin strikes me as the only way to do that. I guess it will be skid rails or pin pulling.
Thanks voices of experience!

Hold the hyd lever back, leave the rams in place, lift the blade up to where you want it, let off the hyd lever, chain around where the cylinder pins in to the blade on one side and you are good to go.
