420 Steer clutches

Post by jdjoe_indiana » Sat Jun 16, 2007 11:20 am

Hi guys, have found a gentleman that is parting a 420. My 420 I have not opened up at all and will be a complete rebuild. My question is should I buy a used set of steer clutches for $140. Or is this too much to gamble on possibley getting some that need rebuilt anyways? I just thought it may be a opportunity I can't pass up. Please let me know what you all think. Thanks Joe

Some may not agree with this, but I say use the old saying, "do it right the first time". As much effort as it takes to pull these down and rebuild, I would go with all new parts. You really do not want to risk going back in there, unless you just have nothing to do but turn wrenches.

This may sound stupid, but you already have used steering clutches, so what gaurantee is there that the ones you are buying are any better than the ones you are taking out? Aside from that, new fiber discs and a rebuilt pressure plate for one side is $240, is it really worth the chance on used? It is up to you, but I have redone way to many steering clutches over the years from them not being done right the first time. That includes my own crawler many years ago when I reused some fiber discs that looked fine, they made it less than two hours before slipping.

Thanks for your opinions, I probably will past it up then. You guys know of many people in the midwest that part these crawlers out or have a few who are "educated" about them. I am in NE Indiana and there are a couple crawlers around, most are still owned buy the original owners though. One guy has a 420C with Kelly loader and backhoe. Joe
