420 masterlink pin
help , lol. Got my final drive replaced , sprocket back on , now I'm battling the track and masterlink , i cant get the nuts loose on the inside to loosen the idler wheel , I've tried kroil and pb blaster but nothing is breaking them loose , got the outside ones loose. So I've tried ratchet straps and come a long to get the link close to where i can put the master pin in but still about a 1/4 inch shy , any tricks ?
Re: 420 masterlink pin
An easy way to remove the adjusters is to remove the 2 bolts that hold the gib plate on the bottom.
They have a 15/16 head, and are either side of the gib where the 2 nuts are tightened against.
Then the whole spring assembly will come right off, and you can get it up on a bench to loosen
the nuts.

Are they under the tracks Buckhorn , cuz i dont see anything that you described , just wondering where the 15/16 bolt heads are , cuz the bracket that has the adjustment nuts on it looks like its all one piece , like part of the side rail.Buckhorn wrote: ↑Sat Jul 10, 2021 1:40 pmAn easy way to remove the adjusters is to remove the 2 bolts that hold the gib plate on the bottom.

Bolts are very close to either end of the axle. If not, something has been seriously modified.

Re: 420 masterlink pin
Like Lavoy said, they are on either side of the idler axle. They hold the plate that has the hole in it for the threaded rod/bolt onto the bottom of slide rail. They are basically either side of the double nuts on the threaded rod. Be careful of not losing any shims.

Re: 420 masterlink pin
Ok , now i see what yur sayin Lavoy and Pete , prior owners have put different size head bolts on a few , thats what was throwin me off , so they are the 2 head bolts that are like an inch or inch and a half away from the grease zerk for the front idler wheel , and if thats the case ive already broke one and broke a half inch breaker bar so after i get both sides off depending on how many more bolts i break I'm going to need to find more of those size bolts. Thanks for the help gentlemen.

Common bolts, and use an impact wrench, the vibration does way more on rusted bolts than brute force with hand tools.

Heating the casting they thread into will help greatly too.

Re: 420 masterlink pin
Ok , got the left outside gib plate off so i can take the big spring with adjustment nuts off and clean up , someone put different size nuts and bolts on it , the inside gib plate seems like the bolts are pressed in maybe cuz they had nuts that came off from the top ?
Re: 420 masterlink pin
I think the gib plate holes are threaded, so I can't imagine what's going on with the inside one.

Re: 420 masterlink pin
So i got the tensioners and gib plates off and Buckhorn yur correct , they are threaded , but someone put different size bolts in them and hogged out the inside so i went with the next size up and used my tap and die set on them and rethreaded them , now i just have to get the correct size bolts. I did notice the idler wheel had alot of play in it on the axle so i greased it thinking that may take up some of the slop but it didnt so then i loosened that half inch bolt on the axle and tried to tighten the axle , the 1 1/4 inch nut on both sides but that didnt tighten it up , is there bearings that i should replace , now would be the time since i have both adjustment springs off ? Thanks in advance.
Re: 420 masterlink pin
Idler is bushings, I normally stock the bushings, out of stock on the seals.
