A quality 15W40 diesel engine oil is fine.

Hi,
I use 10w30 in my 2-cylinders. Easier cranking for the 6v systems. Especially in cold weather.

I use 10w30 as well in my 1958 420c .

If a gas engine, Deere specified 10W30 in summer and 5W20 in winter. I don't think the 15W40 will hurt it though IF you aren't using it in the cold.
