Re: JD 62 Bulldozer ~ Help with year model?
Regarding the Hyd. Cyl. Now, I'm wondering if anyone would share some info on getting the New cups into the tube, lol. They appear to be artificial leather and quite stiff. I'm guessing: Presoak them in hydraulic oil (or Neatsfoot Oil) and use a small ring compressor. Any good advice? (The cup #: 38.1 - 69.85 - 3.17/12.70 ) Seems to be called a "Rotary Shaft Seal".

If you have a rotary shaft seal like the one shown in this link, you have the wrong parts to use for the piston cups, no wonder you are having trouble getting it in the tube. https://www.123bearing.com/seals-OA-38. ... X12.70-NBR If they are not like this one give more info on where and what you purchased.
You need leather or synthetic fabric cups. JD part number U10062. JD calls it a seal. Lavoy has replied before he should have them. A good hydraulic shop should be able to match them up if you take an old one in. If you did take one in so they could see it and the shop gave you hard seals like the one, I posted a link to, I personally would not call it a good shop. The cups are soft and flexible. That is a hard-shelled seal intended to be driven or pressed into a housing for a shaft to rotate inside of.

Re: JD 62 Bulldozer ~ Help with year model?
Jim B Thanks for the quick reply. Lavoy didn't have them at the time, so I ordered a kit from PB&H, a shop in Antrim, NH. Haven't actually tried to insert the rod, with the new cups, yet, just wanted to see if anyone had any good info, before I started, as they certainly are stiff. Will be calling Lavoy again, to see if he's gotten them in yet. I mentioned previously, a company that sold the fabric cups. I don't know if they are suitable, but the price sounds good. (I think) By the way, Jim B, I see you're in W. Maine, I'm in Corinth, can you divulge your location? I was wondering if you or anyone on here knows Terry Briggs, down in Fayette. I know he bought the track machine from Brian Mace. Keep on dozin', folks.

I am in the general area of Fayette. I bought a few things from Terry many years ago. Basically I know of him, but can't really say I know him. He used to have ads in Uncle Henry's and on Craigslist a few times I think. Haven't happened to see any for a while.
So do you have cups or rotary seals? I haven't used PB&H but have heard several good reports. Depending on the material they could be "firm".
Oil them up. I always just tipped the rod a bit and set part of the edge of the lip into the barrel the used my fingers and flat blade screwdriver or putty knife to press the lips down while squaring the rod up until the entire lip was in the barrel. The second cup is no problem as that one's lip is last in. You could use a ring compressor or a hose clamp.

Jim B Terry is basically getting out of wheelin' n dealin' crawlers. Still selling parts, as I bought a #62 Cylinder to play with. He wasn't online, but now has a cellphone, in case someone is interested. The cups have the number stamped in them, which is listed as rotary seals online, however they are flared like a hydraulic cup would be. They are firm, all right, lol! I will see if I can install them today. I have an adjustable ring compressor in Maine, but I'm in MA at the moment, so may try the hose clamp trick first. I'm wondering if other people have experience with this job. I see mostly guests on here, most of the time, lol. Will be posting updates. Thanks for all the info.

The last ones I put in my 62 blade cylinders were Neo-Fab brand, or something like that, and were flexible like the old leather ones.

Checking on Neo Fab on seals/cups. Seem to be fabric reinforced urethane. Sounds good, many companies selling them. Will be trying my stiff ones, (if I can get them in) didn't get to it yet. This is why I bought a spare cylinder, I can experiment. Thanks for the info.

so getting back to the original posting, the identification of the crawler can be narrowed down by other features, such as , the location of the throttle on the dash(centered or offset),
440icd/602/8a,,440icd/831/ripper,,440icd/831/3pt.,misc. 440 parts, i have 5 of these now, but i can stop anytime

Re: JD 62 Bulldozer ~ Help with year model?
Good info, but it may not help the original poster. The original post was made in 2011 and the OP only made the two posts in that year. We don't know if he ever found the crawler's tag or not.
