I have a 1960 JD 440 ICD that keeps veering to the left. I adjusted the alignment and it still continued. Today I put a paint mark on the left and right track to see if one track is traveling faster than the other. After one full rotation the paint mark on the right was 6 inches ahead of the track on the left. This would explain why it's turning to the left, but doesn't explain why. A little back story on the old girl. I bought it with a bad brake band on the left and had to back up any time that I wanted to go left. Even then it still veered left. I ended up having the local votech put a new brake band on and clean up the steering clutch. I insisted on buying a new clutch while it was torn apart, but the votech insisted that the clutch was fine.
Any help is much appreciated, it's almost impossible to get anything done when you have to stop every 3 seconds to adjust your direction.

Re: JD 440 ICD Veers to the left
Hi,
Sounds like the left side has no drive and is being ground powered....
If you pull the right steering lever does it turn right? If it does, then it has power. If it does....
See if the right chain is short-linked.

Hi Stan,
The left side does have power. I put the whole machine on jacks and both tracks moved. It steers good too.
Thanks,
JT

Sounds like it is time to count the number of teeth on the final drive gears. I suspect you may have differing numbers from side to side given the info above

Re: JD 440 ICD Veers to the left
Is there an easy way to check that or do I need to pull out both drives?

I would remove the oil pan and count teeth.

It looks like there is a SN split……with the earlier have 55 teeth and the later version has 56 teeth.
Good luck
