MC hydraulic reservoir

Post by JDMarty » Sat Dec 07, 2024 3:20 pm

I have my Model 1000 cylinders rebuilt and have most of the rest of the lift arms and blade either fixed or made in a machine shop. It occurs to me that before I make the hoses and connect the cam drive pump, etc., I need a reservoir. I do not have one nor do I know what they even look like, capacity, mounting, etc. I looked up the touch-o-matic system for my MT and M tractors but it is integral with the rockshaft. I did figure out it holds 3.5 qts. of 10 weight but I'm sure this is different for the MC1000 system. Does anyone either have one or have a picture of one? My 1949 MC is running perfect and I'm getting anxious about equipping it with a blade.

I actually found a book for the MC1000 system and it says the reservoir with the integral cylinders holds 11 quarts but I still don't know how much the reservoir itself holds.

Have you talked with Lavoy about this? He might have, or know of, a reservoir and mounting parts. From the parts catalogs it looks like the MC and the 40 used the same reservoir. There is a drawing in the parts catalog PC848.

There are a couple drawings in the MC Operator's manual (OMTMC2551), in the hydraulic attachment section. that show approximately where the reservoir was located. Do you have a copy of the Operator's Manual?

I am guessing the reservoir itself likely held about 9 quarts of the 11, maybe more. If you are planning to build your own, I would say, make it hold at least 10 quarts, if not all 11. Better to have a bit too much oil, than not enough. Don't forget to allow for expansion as the oil warms and air space, beyond the oil volume.

I found this picture online and added an arrow pointing at the reservoir.

Great info guys. I will contact Lavoy. In the interim, does the reservoir need to withstand the 600 psi the pump produces?

No, those reservoirs are not under pressure. It just holds oil for the pump to pull from and oil from the valve returns to it at a free flow pressure of maybe a few pounds. The pressure is made when the valve sends it to the cylinder and stops it from being a free flow back to the reservoir. If it is not restricted pressure is minimal.

The MC and 40C show the same part number reservoir. The 420 and later reservoir is a different part number, it may fit, Lavoy would likely know for certain.

MC 1000 Assembly

Post by JDMarty » Sun Dec 22, 2024 5:59 pm

Lavoy did find a reservoir for me and many other parts. I am still missing the two spacers, one on each side, that mount the rear of the hydraulic cylinders with two more U bolts. I have the tracks removed but still need to raise the frame rails (2"x2") which are set at 90 deg from flat. Once I acquire those, hopefully also from Lavoy, I can begin assembling this thing. Maybe Lavoy will have these also.

I did, have been out of the office, but I have a pile of parts started for you.
I think I have the spacers, let me check.

I finally have my 1949 MC with the mc1000 series hydraulic system and blade built. Thank you Lavoy for supplying most of the parts. I used two different machine shops to rebuild cylinders and make a few custom parts. I know it holds 11 quarts of oil but am not sure what is best for this system. It is separate from the engine and the book says 10 weight oil. Does anyone know if this is the best to use or should I use regular hydraulic oil?

Use AW32 or AW46 hydraulic oil, it is cheap, and normally readily available.

Thanks Lavoy. I got the AW46 since it is 20W and the AW32 is 10W.
