440 ICD engine in my 40c?

Yes...I have still not brought back my 40 crawler to life with a cracked block. Its really hard to find donors in Canada.

I hate AI.

Today AI told me the engine from the ICD would fit. So I went out and looked at the engine mount, sure as shart, it looks identical. May measure after dinner.

Anyone more knowledgeable?

Why do I have an ICD engine? One was forsale years ago, did an inframe and put it in a woodsplitter. Just because. It runs awesome. The water pump mount is cracked but I can either have it welded or put an oil cooler on instead. Should be easy to find.

So.....would the 440 diesel swap into a 40C without much headache? Worst case I try it and see 🥳

Extensive headache, requires substantially more than just the engine, and even if you get it in there, eat will eat the transmissiion in about 10 minutes.

Hi,

There were essentially three series of changes to the machine between the 40 and the 440. Most of the parts were changed according to the Parts Catalog.

The main area for your concern is from the small transmission to the large. The power was increased on the 420 from the 40, then again from the 420 to the 440. And that was the gas engine. The Diesel sports even more power from both the fuel change and the change from a 4-cycle to a 2-cycle.

I can see a Detroit 2-53 twisting every shaft and stripping every gear in a 40's driveline.

Heck, that 2-53 would rip up the ring and pinion gear on a 435 wheel tractor if one used it to pull rather than put that extra power out the PTO shaft.

The 2-53 from a 440 has around 30% more horse power than a gas 40 engine. Its even hard on the upgraded 440 parts.

Is your 40 engine block cracked from freezing. If it is that can sometimes be repaired. “Stitching, Brazing and epoxy have all worked for me.

I have several 40 blocks on hand, they are not hard to come by.
