Does anyone have any good pictures of the inside of an operational winch or even better a manual or parts list. I'm going to try and restore the winch on the 420 crawler i got last month. I know i'll be making parts as some are completed pooched.

dave, i am currently working on a gearmatic for a customer, i am just about done, but i still have the cover off, i will take a pic of it for u tomorrow. i also have a couple of them all torn apart, i can take a pic of them too if u want.

Cool that would be great, this one still turns with the pto but other then that i think i will have to tear it apart before i know how bad its gonna be.

The rights to Gearmatic are owned by Paccar. If you go to Paccarwinch.com and contact them, they will sell you a manual. Don't remember how much it was, but not expensive. Unfortunately they have almost no parts available any more. I have some new and repro parts available, let me know.

Sent paccar an email and they haven't got back to me, seems alot of people are looking for the manual for the 8a, google had pages of guys trying to find them in one forum or another. I need to pull the winch apart and see whats missing, i'm working on casting a new cover, be aluminum but hopefully it should work. If not i may be able to stitch and lock the broken one back together but thats gonna be a lot of work.

Casting a new cover will be kind of pricey I would think. I probably have a used one on a parts winch, would have to do some digging.

I could duplicate that cover in cast iron as I work in a grey iron foundry, but seeing as you are in Canada, the shipping would probably be too much trouble.

Try to find an iron foundry around you that still hand molds parts, if you have the part that they can use as a loose pattern it is not much work to reproduce it.

Ray, does your shop do single pours? I have something in mind I'd like cast and I'm not sure who does this kind of work.

Brett, if you wanted to pay them for it, they do sometimes make patterns for outside jobs. A single pour would actually be preferable as we are not a high production foundry. There are almost certainly shops much closer to you though, the trick is finding them.

If someone were local to me and had an original part (no pattern work involved), I could reproduce it. They let me make small molds if I want something made.

Worst part of up here is the price of gas jumped about 5 years ago and killed all the foundries the only ones left are doing aluminum. All the steel work i know of is out of china. I'll have to work on it in the winter, tried to get some parts off it and they are rusted solid, probly how they broke the cover. Thank for the offer though Ray, if i could i would, damn border piss's me off all the time.

It's a pretty simple thing. I want to replace the turret cross slide on a Logan lathe I have to a t-slot cross slide. So basically a 12"x8"x2.25" block of iron with some rough slots and reliefs in it.

I've looked around some for raw materials to machine, and I should exhaust that avenue before I go the casting route.

I have a gearmatic 8A on my skidder, though it is not a JD it is vintage, a Garrett Tree Farmer model 15. Don Garrett of Garrett Enumclaw(WA), has furnished me with a manual for my winch, and he has some parts. Very helpful individual when it comes to the old winch. (360)825-2500.Ask for Don.

forgive me for I know not what im doing with this confuzer... IM beond the time in my life to learn this new stuff..so if u can putup with misspeld words ect. I will try to get my point across again...that engine makes me sick any one that keeps the thumb on the spray button that long should have a swift kick where the sun dont shine... stop and think of what you are looking at here!!!!melted ground up twisted and run that way , that poor engine tried to do what was asked of it and it killed itself doing it..rather tha find out why its not starting pump the ole eather in by the can ,, it took more than one can to do that dammage ill bet next months welfare check on that. let er fog and then a sniff is all it takes , some day I will tell you a story of a police car that died a simaler fate.. its good... yes a good starter & battery is vrey important too..
