JD 440ICD
Just purchased a JD440ICD. Can not start the machine but previous owner said it ran 3 weeks ago. Starter will engage but engine will not turn over. I have several questions
1) Is this a positive or negative ground system?
2) Is there a compression release to make starting easier?
3) 12V starting circuit?

Lavoy: thanks for the advice. Got the machine started. Engine was a little stuck, but with a little help and two batteries, it finally started. Everything seems works except the steering, so I guess I will have to learn how to repair the steering clutches. I read somewhere that there is a CD repair manual. Do you know how to purchase the CD? How involved is the steering clutch repair?
Lavoy: Found the gentlemen with the CD manuals on your site. Thanks. Opened the clutch covers and the left steering mechanism is moving freely, but rusted. Right side linkage is pretty rusted and seized. Gaskets were gone on covers so everything appears to have gotten wet over time and rusted. Carefully applied small amount of penetrating oil to linkages but my guess is the pressure plates are also rusted and not disengaging. Brakes seem to work but will stall engine if apply too hard.
I have a crawler loader so sounds like this will be challenging!

After reading your post I sent you a private message about the CD. Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks for the information. How much of the rear end of this machine needs to be deassembled to get to the steering clutches? No obvious easy access, so I am guessing this requires quite a bit of diassembly. I plan on ordering the CD manuals which hopefully will make this a little easier. Should have no problems with the weight of the parts since I have a 1 ton gantry, which should be enough for the various part removal. Just need to get the crawler under the gantry!
