The 440 IC can have three different carbs: TSX 756, 768, and 777, depending on the year.
Sounds like your carb is various parts based on the colors that you stated. I would try to find a good complete one.

The SN is 441200, which would make this a 1958 model. The local Deere dealer could give me the JD part number (AT-10181), but they were unable to cross reference it to the correct Marvel-Schebler TSX number. Can anyone narrow down whether it should be a 777, 768, or 756?
The next question is can I just install the correct rebuild kit into the carb body that I have and expect it to work, or do I need to buy a whole new carburetor? The machine ran for years with the one that's on it, but obviously the rebuld kit that I got changed everything.
I have not ruled out any other problems with the new head, as 1010crazy pointed out, but I think I need to get the carb situation straighted out first. Incedently through this process I discovered that I had a defective new spark plug, which was likely at least part of the problem with the lack of power.

Hi,
Ah, yes. The defective new sparking plug. What fun to t-shoot that when it happens. It can't be the plugs, they're new......
I found out a long time ago that if these things run too lean, then they tend to cause the ceramic insulators on brand-new spark plugs to crack after just a few minutes of running time.
Just a thought that problem (a) might have led to problem (b) here....
As for the carb, I'd be tempted to say that a 58 440 used the same carb as a 58 420, but I don't know that for *sure*.
Were there any engine changes that caused the carbs to be different between the late 420 and the early 440?
I know there are other differences, but I am unaware of any in the engines....
Later!
Stan

I'm not aware of any differences - allthough I am not very familiar with the 420. The listings I have seen for replacement carburetors and repair kits group the 40, 420, 440 together, but list three TSX numbers. I'm not sure if that means that these are interchangeable or not. Actually, the number on my dad's 40 carburetor does not match any of those I have seen listed. Nonetheless, it ran as well as can be expected with the 40 carb with no adjustment and working the throttle manually. What is the number on your 420 carb?

Send me an email and I can send you a Marvel-Schebler carburetor manual which may be of help to you. It has info on the TSX models. Paul

Paul just sent me that manual also. It is very detailed and complete. It actually walks you through disassembly and back, along with explaining how it works.

Glad the manual is useful to others. I've forgotten how I got it, but please feel free to share it.
OT: I also have a Gearmatic 8a/g winch manual that I got from Gil a few years ago that I scanned to .pdf format that I can share too.
