Hi,

BTW, the place to stick the leads when checking a battery, is right at both posts. Not at the other end of cables. Just thought I ought to mention what is obvious to me.... ;)

Thanks guys for the collective wisdom. I borrowed an analog multimeter and found that the generator and regulator are working as designed; the digital multimeter was just too sensitive and showed a blur of readings. Now onto getting Spring chores completed.

Lavoy: I've felt your pain. Since I bought my machine, I've repaired or replaced all my electricals so that my machine starts and runs as it should. This has just been the latest chapter. It can be very annoying that some overlooked, yet in hindsight, obvious problem is keeping things from working as they should. ie: when I first bought the machine, the little insulator that goes into the distributor had a crack and caused me to use a few choice words until it was found and replaced.

Hi,

Ah. There is an issue with many DMMs when on DC which is varying. I see where you found that out with yours.

The root cause of that issue lies within the Analog to Digital chip inside the meter, so it isn't a make or model specific issue. It is a 'low cost' meter issue.

This is why I always use Fluke brand meters. Multi-hundred dollars each ones. They don't have such issues. Nothing worse than to be shooting trouble that is a figment of your instrument's imagination.

Plus, Fluke meters have this nifty analog bar graph along the bottom of the display. So you can see the variations *and* also have a steady digital reading at the same time.

Yeah. I know. I sound like an ad for Fluke. Well, all I can say is: If it works well, it's a Fluke!! :P

Next up, a pitch for Tektronix and Hewlett Packard (aka Agilent and now Keysight. I wish they would stop changing their name).....
