420C axel shaft shims

Post by dooinitjd » Thu Apr 30, 2015 7:11 am

My labor of love is restoring Dad's crawler. Retired now and in a little over my head on this project, but have manuals and parts from Lavoy . I put all new parts in right side final which showed signs of water damage at one time. Now after assembling axle shaft it needs almost 1/4 inch of shims. It didn't appear damaged or worn and I think it's assembled correctly. Is it ok to go ahead and shim that much ?

No, should never take that much, do some more checking first. Make sure you have the washer behind the inside bearing, spacer badly worn, etc.
