420 clutch pack overfill?

Post by dooinitjd » Tue May 05, 2015 7:53 am

Going slow and double checking everything I do!! Right side reassembly of steering clutch came out fine with no finger adjustment required. (all original in spec).
Left side with new fibers overfilled height of drum by thickness of last fiber and fingers need allot of adjustment (about .190). All are in spec except new fibers from Lavoy are a little over (.159). Couldn't find a thread addressing this , so is it okay to proceed ? Everything is correct 7 fibers and 6 steels.

I had a similar issue when I put my 440 together. I actually had to leave a fiber out of each side I believe.
Check and make sure both of your drums are exactly the same. Maybe one is newer than the other and that's why there's is more space for the fibers and steels.
Lavoy will know for sure though.

Thanks for the input, right side is all buttoned up but I'm sure they are same , about 1-9/16 deep. I will try adjusting fingers next.
Comment: I am amazed at the interest in these old crawlers on this site . It's a must read for me everyday. I have shown my other 420c at a few local shows here in North Central Ohio and there is very little interest shown. But I like em allot. So thanks to Lavoy for all he does to keep us going!

Hi,

I found the same to be true at shows around here. No one 'gets' crawlers. So, I don't bother to haul it around any more.

Looks like we have more in common than just a 420c. We both have our Dad's machines. Your tag line says 'found'. I never lost this one. I just hauled it from his place to mine after he passed on. Not much of a challenge there! ;)

Hi,

On the fibers, last time I did this one of mine, each fiber disc package from Deere had an extra. As in the same P/N package for a 350. But, I know you did not try to use one too many. That has to be an out of whack adjustment....

It's neat having one that's family, Dad bought it new in 1957 and due to illness, had to sell the dairy farm and most equipment in 1977. I didn't have two nickels extra at the time . Tried to find it several years later, gave up and bought one . Then checked out a local auction in fall of 2013 and their she was, Shawnee loader with welds Dad had done, 3 counterweights, and reverser . Needless to say ,mine was highest bid.

My MC was purchased new by my great granddad....when my dad retired from the ranch in 1994, I got it. Nice to have the family heritage.

Hi,

I have told this one before, but it has been a while....

Mine wasn't bought by Dad new. It was, literally, second hand in 67. My Uncle (Dad's brother, not Mom's) sold it new in 58 - also to a dairy farmer. He traded it in on a 3 cyl 820 diesel with a loader in 67. So, Dad scarfed it up and we have had it ever since. My Uncle was fond of griping that he let Dad 'take it away from him'. ;)

Yeah, it is a hijack of the thread, but a good one. :)

As long as you can adjust the fingers to the correct height you are fine, minor variations in disc thickness don't matter.

Mine was bought by a couple of uncles of mine in the mid 60's. It had a hard life working in the woods but I've inherited it and it would be hard to part with. My D4 and Farmall came the same route and I really enjoy em all!!

Fingers are adjusted , had a little bit left, but not much, hope everything works. I would like to get it done and painted this summer. Dads here in spirit only ,but that keeps me going. One of the neighbors told me at the auction "that crawler fit your dad like a glove". Makes it mighty special.

THE ONE thing to watch for is make sure you still have release room in the the cover/pressure plate

The crawlers seem to be sparse in Ohio. I went to an auction last week to look at a 420. Looked all original, undercarriage was decent 50% maybe. It had a factory 3 point and original toplink.
It ended up going for $4,750  I was blown away. However you don't see many of these smaller crawlers around here so maybe that's why.
