Lost power on one track

Post by Badbones » Tue May 19, 2015 10:54 am

Just took my 420 crawler out for the first time this year and steering works but if I'm pushing dirt I have no power on the left track. Work fine when I stored it. Anybody have suggestions

If the power loss slowly goes away then you have a seal leaking, letting oil into the clutch housing and your clutch is slipping.
If you simply have no power at that track at all then there's a good chance you stripped the splines inside the ring gear or the shaft going between the ring gear and clutch discs or stripped the centers out of the clutch discs.

Hi,

Usually, if they worked fine, then sat for awhile and....

There is power to a track but it does not want to steer....
Then the steel discs have a rust film.

There is steering but no, or low, power to a track....
Then oil has seeped past a seal and wet the clutch discs.

check the free play adjustment if your lucky it has wear and the throwout bearing is now riding the clutch fingers and holding some of the pressure off the clutch pack allowing it to slip

Here is the link to order manuals online as a PDF download, on a CD/DVD, or hardcopy.

https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/index ... ductSearch

I couldn't see if they had the 420 on there because their website had a glitch but normally you would search for keyword "420" in the upper left of that page.

UPDATE: They fixed it and they do have the service manual (SM2019) as well as the operator manual (OMT20 or OMT31756) and the part manual (PC505). I would point out you can find the parts manual online free so probably don't need to buy that, and that some of the operator manual info is often repeated in the service manual.

Hi,

At the risk of sounding like a broken record.....I know. What is a record?? :P

Things which had not changed from the 40 or even from the M, are not repeated in the 420 service manual. So, for those unfamiliar with these old machines may find they need the other manuals as well.

The reason being is the manuals were intended for dealer shops. There, they would have the manuals in a large binder rack on a bench, in order, with the service bulletins in between the main manuals.

And, for the phase-III 420, the 440 manual may also be needed. I am thinking specifically about the differential style direction reverser, that being the one area of my 420-3 I needed the 440 manual for....

I have yet to need any part catalog besides PC505 for the 420, though.

Finally, any attachments, like dozer or loader, have their own manuals. Just Op Manuals, which cover service and parts within. So, only the one needed for what one happens to have.
