2010 HLR Transmission leak

Post by AussieJD2010 » Thu May 28, 2015 4:23 pm

I have had this 2010 for 10 years or so and it has been leaving a thin line of oil on the ground since day 1. I don't use it every day so I have been just topping up the transmission each use.
I'm in the middle of a steering rebuild so I thought it would be a good time to also try to fix the transmission leak.

The oil is clean and it's coming from the front of the trans. With the bash plate removed I can see the oil dripping from a cotter pin on the cover that bolts to the clutch housing.

Does anyone know if the front seal would be the only problem and is it possible to simply replace the seal or is it more involved?

Hi,

Well, I don't know the 2010, having jumped over the 10 series from a 420 to a 350. But...

Input shaft seals generally require pulling everything apart from the front. So, if the leak is minor and it can get out of the bellhousing as fast as it gets past the seal, I might well opt to call it an Automatic Oil Change 'Feature'. ;)

I have a 18 year old 8 foot finishing mower that seeps 90wt out of the gearbox seal. I just add a little oil before I start. And call it the AOCS (Auto Oil Change System). My right hyd cyl seal on the 420 dozer does this as well. Also an AOCS until the drip turns into a stream....

Just keep an eye on it and keep adding oil and figure on eventually having to tackle the job. But, make sure it isn't pooling up inside the housing.

wow,
so I'm in for more trouble than I thought.
I don't want to put this machine together and find later on that I need to separate it again so while I have it half apart I'm going to keep going and try to fix the leak.......
maybe start another post on the job

For any shaft seal leaking be sure to check the bearings that are supposed to hold the shaft centered in the seal. Just a reminder.

I haven't pulled this apart yet but looking at the SM I'm thinking it could be a seal or gasket in the hydraulic pump that's leaking, not the trans front cover.
I'll post some photos if I decide to separate the trans from the clutch housing....
