Gas boiling in tank?

Post by PatPax » Mon Jun 08, 2015 4:22 pm

Has anyone had a problem with gas boiling, bubbling, percolating or gurgling inside the tank? We have been unusually hot here, 20 degrees or more above normal, 93 degrees today. This is my 1st summer with my 1st crawler. When I shut it down after running it for about 2 hours I heard this gurgling and thought it was the radiator. Up on closer inspection it was coming from the gas tank. I removed the cap to find the gas was either percolating or boiling. VERY SCARY!!!

I have the same 2010 with Loader here in Australia and we have lots of summer days in the 40's.. around 104 Fahrenheit..
I can use it without too much overheating issues but it does start to blow steam/water from the radiator cap if I work it to hard. I was actually going to renew the seal in the water pump and check all the tolerances and impeller while I had it apart.
Never noticed the diesel getting overly hot but it's something I will look at after I get it all back together.

I would rather have a diesel BUT could not find one & had to settle for gas. Thankfully I have not had a problem with the radiator, just this gas boiling issue. I will be working it all week in these hot temps. I insulated the exhaust last night and put a heat shield between the manifold and gas tank. Not sure if a heat shield was there originally, if so its gone now . I had some insulation on hand left from when I re-insulated my wood cook stove oven. I hope it works.

Has anyone else had a problem with gas boiling in the tank? If so what did you do?

YEs, there should be a heat shield above the manifold.

I once had the gas boiling issue on an 8N ford, battery hold -down had rusted to the point
that it got loose enough for the positive post on the battery came in contact with the bottom of the gas tank. Before I realized it had happened, the gas in the tank was boiling.
Very tedious situation.
