PTO Chipper

Post by mickswiftspy » Tue Aug 22, 2006 12:13 am

I was just wondering if anybody has any experience running a PTO chipper on a JD crawler, (or on any tractor for that matter)? I have a 420C with 3pt and pto, and was considering getting a pto chipper. Any thoughts on this? Do the pto chippers works as well as a chipper that has its own engine? Thanks-Jim

Jim,
I bought an 8HP engine driven chipper once. Used it for 5 minutes and returned it, biggest piece of junk I ever used. I was trying to chip green brances less than 2" in diameter, and it was marginal at best. I think a PTO chipper with 3 times the HP and who knows how much more torque would work a lot better.

I know one of the big problems with PTO chippers is that the direct-drive versions on a 540 RPM PTO don't work very well. I saw a really nice setup up at the Wisconsin Farm Technology show that used a multistage belt drive system to get the RPMs for the chipper up to decent range. Let me dig around a bit for the glossies I picked up and I'll get you a web address.

PTO Chipper

I have a PTO chipper that I run on a 1950 JD M with a converted 3 point hitch. I think it works great. I run the M at full throttle which gives me about 540 RPM. It will eat whatever you put in there as long as you are not trying to do a major job like the big units will do.

What diameter material can it handle? I was looking at something that could manage 5-6 inches in diameter.
Thanks for all the responses-Jim

PTO chipper diameter

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:56 am

Jim, The one I have is rated at 4.5 inch diameter. It seems to handle almost all that I need to put in it.
I am using mine to chip low hanging limbs. If they are too big for the chipper (+4.5 inch D), I just cut them in to firewood.
I have been very pleased with this one.

Hi,

I have a direct-drive 540 RPM unit that'll take 5" and it works well. It will chop up stuff nearly as fast as I can insert it into the hopper. It has an optional hydraulically driven feeder that keeps the pressure on the wood while it's being chipped.

I can't imagine having to push the large stuff in by hand - that'd get old really quickly! This does brings up the point of possibly needing rear hydraulics on the tractor.

In my case, I don't use the chipper on my older 2 cyl machines, but on my much newer 4500 4WD tractor, which has hyd ports on the back as well as the front. :)
