440 IC Bit the Dust

I was pushing dirt today, having a good time, and the tractor was running strong and smooth, Then, all of a sudden, KA BLANG, WHANG, thump. That's all she wrote. It was about 6pm so I just got off and headed to the house and supper. I imagine a rod come loose or maybe even a broke crank. Anyways, I'll check it closer tomorrow.
Are there any sources for a rebuilt gas short block or am I going to have to build my own? This crawler is on it's second major remanufactur, and is in otherwise superb condition. It was even sandblasted and painted at overhaul.

There are pleanty of parts machines and engines around. Check it out and see what you need.

None that I would trust as far as the large suppliers. See what is bad, block may be fine. If not, I think I have one left.

Beautiful morning here in NE Texas, rain showers moved thru, watered the grass and settled the dust. I checked out the 440 and found no oil on the ground, no gaping holes in the crankcase, and the engine makes full rotations on the starter with only a heavy clunk on each rotate. Maybe just a big end bearing let go. Anyways, It doesn't sound too expensive but I'll go thru the whole engine while I have it out. No sense cutting any corners at this point.
Hey, while I'm on here, does anybody have a pair of those cute little upper rear sprocket mud covers? My dad bought this tractor new in '59 and we have always wanted some.

I removed the engine today and dissembled enough to see the damage. The crankshaft parted just forward of the rear crankpin. I can't see any other damage so I might be able to replace the crank without removing the head or pistons.

It just gets better!! On removing the front half of the crankshaft, I find a large crack emanating from the bearing cap bolt hole. Enough said there, Laroy has a crank but not a block at this time. Anybody know of a 59-60 gas engine short block for a 440?
Now, for the silver lining!!! I've just located a '78 JD 450C within 400 miles of me. Fresh engine, tracks, a pair of NEW spare sprockets, and a brush rake. All for 14,000. ROP cage and the paint looks nice to boot.
I think I'm going to buy the 450 and repair the 440 as I have a fellow wanting it anyway.

I saw that engine when I bought that reverser and it looked complete.... to bad the price of stamps are so bad now.

shipping costs are tough. i dont know if Fastenal still takes private freight or not, but they use to be a good deal.

I'll check with them. The problem is that the crawler has been cut on the side frames. Only the engine ,from control pedestal froward, is left. No undercarriage, reverser, tranny, finals, or track. Getting it loaded may be a problem. See linkfor the add.

I know Fastenal and Yellow freight both ship from Rutland VT, so I'd talk to the folks selling the 440 and see what they can do to seal the deal - palletize, bring to their local shipping place, etc. They advertise on craigslist frequently so I'm sure they've shipped things before. Best wishes if buying and shipping these parts make financial sense to you.
