440 reverser

Post by kluegcollector » Sun Oct 25, 2015 5:15 pm

Hey I was wondering what would it take or if its even possible to just remove the reverser from my 1960 440ic. Mine has broken in such a way that I cannot move. The rear transmission is in line (we already checked that). It will roll if the clutch pedal is pressed down. When it is in neutral and the clutch pedal is released the tractor will bogg down and die like its in a heavy pull. I don't need or even want the reverser. It is more of a headache than a help even if it was working. Thanks for any help!

Yes it can be removed, you will need a propeller shaft from a non-reverser crawler and the splined coupling.
If the reverser was more of a headache than it was worth, it was in disrepair, adjusted wrong, or being operated wrong. I can think of no situation where a reverser is more of a pain than not other than some particular attachment that it could effect.

i just added one to mine and it makes the crawler so much nicer... I would think twice about removing it... I did keep my shaft in case mine ever goes on me... but if it did i would try to fix it first. If used right it should last..

Well I haven't had a working one since I bought this crawler. It was disengage when I bought it. It was bypassed or something already by the previous owner. Now something internally is broken. I am thinking about removing it because I don't need it. It's not that much trouble just to shift to reverse.

Hi,

The reverser has to be working, or the machine won't move. So, it must have been a case where the Reverse clutch pack was out and it was locked in Forward. And, now the Forward clutch pack is out. This usually comes from someone trying to use it like a more modern reverser and failing to use the master clutch and stopping dead before they work the lever. That kills the clutch packs.

Only thing to do is start yanking the machine apart from the front back. Then, once you get the reverser out onto the bench, fix it. Or, find that long shaft from a non-reverser crawler.

While operating without a reverser, though, you will always have issues with the sliding gear transmission not wanting to engage the teeth. This is why they invented the reverser in the first place. I would fix it.

I have to agree with the other posts, it may seem easier to go the straight shaft route, and it probably would be a quicker way to get back going, but the machine is so much better to operate with the reverser it is worth the extra work and money to get it working.

Since you aren't a fan of the reverser, if it isn't completely torn up I may be interested in buying it. I may even have a spare straight shaft that you would need, but I'm not 100% sure.

I used to just feel them with the tip of my finger, but not any more. Now I tear them down and check the needle bearings and shafts to be sure.
Discs are no problem, neither are seals.
