1959 JD 440 ICD

Post by JD440ICD2006 » Wed Aug 30, 2006 7:55 am

I am brand new to the GM 2-53 diesel. I am familiar with the JD made diesels but this 2-53 is a different breed.
I was pushing some light dirt loads and a few rotten stumps. I had been running for about 30 minutes. The temp and oil pressure were good. Sparks of carbon began to come out of the exhaust stack. It was not many but one of them landed on my leg and got my attention. Is this from having sat up for a while, or not having been run and carbon built up?
Also, this engine smokes more than my JD built engines. It is not water or oil, it appears to just be diesel. Seems to have plenty of power.
Is there any recommended additive that would help clean the injectors and not mess up the pumps or anything?

Is it possible that the muffler/exhaust stack is clogged and or deteriorated?

2-53 detroit

Post by Joe Iannitto » Wed Aug 30, 2006 3:02 pm

my experience with the 2-53 detroit comes from my old gamagoat. The military version is simular to your civilian version with the exception I have alumium block and duel oil pickup.
The 2-53 is a 2 stroke engine and it does tend to smoke for no reason. And yes they do tend to throw off a few sparks. I think the sparks are from carbon build up when the engine cold.
I find your statement about oil pressure interesting. what is your idle pressure and what is the running pressure. My gamagoat's presure at idle is about 15 lbs and running is about 50 lbs.
Hope all this helps

it is a 6 wheel truck 1 1/4 ton. the driver sits forward of the engine. the 3 axels are evenly spaced. The truck is about 15 feet long and there is a pivot point in the center between the tractor and carrier so that truck can rotate 30 degrees front axel to back axel. Also another feature of the pivot point is that the carrier can bend 45 degrees up and down but can't turn left or right. To turn the back wheels turn opposite the front. I can send you a picture or you can search online for the website. It isn't a common truck only about 12000 made . At 50 mph top speed you can hear it coming a mile away.

I have always wanted a weasel, local guy that bought a crawler from me talks about them. Sounds like it would be a blast in the snow.

Remember you can still buy those 53- series new from Detroit BUT they dont sell in north america becouse of emisions noise polution was one small problem this and the exhaust you could see and hear miles for an other bad habit these engines also marked their territory better than a fathful dog when ever they sat for seconds running or shut down Besides that they slober like no other motor ever made including blowing carbon . Now power is the only good story 60% more HP and 30% more lug in the 2 stroke than equal cubic inch 4 strokes of there day while they are eating stove oil if they have to. And Deere was first to run these on canola oil something that at that time was unheard of in the 50s I guess what I am saying is over looking a lot of bad habits these were one tough old engine and that is why Deere used them as well as others at that time The Canadian General Motors build shop for Weasels and Grizleys is 15 miles away they test Grizleys and the newest stuff till it is so mired till you cant even see it .Then call us contractors to as they say[ retreve it ] 18 tons at 30 miles per hour with pointed front =5feet below mud level or all a 20 ton excavator will pull.Digitup.
