Offset disk on a 420 C?

Post by Paul J » Sun Nov 01, 2015 7:16 pm

Anybody have any experience pulling an offset (Rome) disk with a 420C? I'm wondering how big of a disk I can expect to pull with it. Gonna use it for hillside pasture renovation. It's a future purchase, and I don't want to buy something bigger than I can pull easily. I've got my eye on a 6 foot disk with no wheels.

It should handle that nicely. Seems to me, you can adjust them to varying degrees of cutting.

It's going to be like any other ground breaking operation- what you can pull depends on the ground. An offset disc is a heavy pull no matter what the soil. I'd be inclined to go a little smaller rather than a little bigger. Easier on you and the machine and you'll likely go faster which get's the job done quicker and often gives better results on the soil.

420 will pull that easily, what do you have for a hitch, drawbar or 3-point?

Should easily pull a 6' offset. Worst case would require lessening the angle. You didn't say disk size and weight. Big blades and heavy would pull much harder but most small discs I've seen of that size weren't big.

Width is not the only factory, what blade size? A 24" blade pulls a lot harder than a disc with 16" blades. Bigger factor is depth and soil type. Here at my place I could easily pull 10' because you can't get it in the ground anyway. At the farm buried to the hubs with my 6' Killefer with 22" blades, quite a pull.

Drawbar hitch.

I'll have to look closer at the disk - it's nothing like we used in road construction - much lighter.

The owner pulled it with a Ford 5000 farm tractor, and at one time, with a 630 JD. If I remember right - the 630 struggled a little with it.

I'd rather have too small than too big, of course.

Thanks for the comments - I'm in the looking/dreaming stage - my pasture has some steep areas, and I'd like to renovate it in a couple of years.
