starter on a mc

Post by monzanick » Mon Nov 02, 2015 6:16 pm

I went to start my Mc , 2 turns then nothing. Ahhhh bummer. I pulled the switch off the starter, everything burt/melted. I tried cleaning the copper, fired up once then wouldn't go after it was shut off. I finally got it popped off by putting 12v to it.

Anyone know a reputable (USA made) switch? I plan to pull the starter and give it new brushes too. I don't want China-brakes-the-3rd-time-you-use-it-crap.

I have switches on hand, not sure of manufacture, but never had a problem with them.

interchange?

Post by monzanick » Sun Nov 15, 2015 8:34 pm

It appears that I have more problems than the switch. I pulled the switch, and put power straight to the copper lug, it would spin, very slowly.

I pulled the starter, found worn brushes and a dirty communtator. I replaced the brushes, cleaned the communtator and checked the armature for shorts.

I slapped it back in, slow turning, stops and it smokes when you hold the switch.

I suspect the fields are shorted.

Can you tell me what other models use this starter? Maybe I can get another starter for cheaper than a rebuild.

What says the other starter you get cheap is any different than the one you have, or doesn't get that way in a months period. Rebuild yours, then you know what you have.

starter rebuild

Post by monzanick » Fri Nov 20, 2015 11:22 pm

I found a rebuilder, 40miles away. The toddler and I brought the starter to him.

42 bucks later, one fixed starter. He told me that starter is built a hellofa lot better than any big rig starter even. He recommended I change up to 12v. According to this guy, he would bet that it could handle 24v easily.

The sad part is, this guy is selling his shop. sign of the times I guess.
When in doubt, talk to the local tractor repair guy, his dad gave me the referral

Hi,

The 6v starters handle 12v pretty well. Unfortunately, the ring gear teeth on the flywheels do not do as well....

If the starter is rebuilt, there is no reason to go to 12 volts. 12 volts is a bandaid fix for other underlying problems, as long as he did a correct rebuild, it will be unnecessary.
24 volts would break the end of the housing off in a matter of seconds assuming the drive did not explode first the instant it engages.
