I have a old 40c and the steering clutch is lock up i have pulled them off and a part the clutch disks dont look bad one is cracked .I really dont want to buy new steering clutchs for the cheapest I have seen is 500$.So can I just cean them up with a wire wheel and put them back in and what can I do to prevent this from happening again .
Also it looks like it was yellow and one time and someone painted Jd green over it where they ever yellow .

If you shop on-line, you'll find that you can buy individual pieces for your clutches. I think the yellow was used on industrial dozers.

Hi,

It matters. A lot. To drive, no. To steer, yes. The fibers have to move when the steels are stopped, or it will not turn at all.

you have gone through the trouble to tear down the machine to get to the clutch, at this point you should replace everything that looks worn or used up.
I know the money part stinks, but it stinks alot more to put it all back together with worn parts.....your just pulling finals for nothing.
I also would not sand or wire wheel those fiber disks, I would imagine they are asbestos based.
take your time and do it up right and you will have a nice acting, feeling clutch for many years.....then you can do the other side!!!!

My biggest concern is sinking a whole Lotta money in this thing and never getting it back out of it for both steering clutches are froze the fella I bought off of did not tell me straight out all the stuff wrong with it where the bell housing bolts to the transmission that two of the four bolts are stripped out of the transmission housing. Transmission case is cracked from the gearshift are all away down the side to the bottom on both sides and there is no radiator cover I paid way too much for The condition it's in

Read what Stan says in the lower part of his post.Crawlers can be a huge money pit.Odds are you can never get your money out of one of these things even if someone gave you one for free.Take inventory of what the machine needs and figure double that amount in stuff you can't see on the surface.I hate to discourage anyone from fixing an old JD crawler
but sometimes you need to cut your losses and part the beast out.
Luck,JimAnderson

you seem to be at a crossroads, trans case can also be replaced, stripped bolts repaired etc, it just depends on how much time and money you want to put into it.

Hi,

I don't know what that link has to do with a crawler. Must have copied the wrong one.

Cracked trans case probably from someone slamming over downed tree trunks.

No, 50 tin won't fit a 40.

You may not like the answer, but I will tell you what I have told tons of people over the years. If your primary concern is not getting out of it what you put into it, you need to sell it now and cut your losses. NONE of these crawlers will ever be worth what you put into them if done correctly. You have to want to own it for the sake of having it. And if you bubblegum something together, it still won't be worth what you paid for it, because sooner or later it is going to break catastrophically and then you have a large lawn ornament.
