We've got a 420 Phase 2. Heard a nasty 'click' in first gear that had never been there before. Off came the shifter cover and lo and behold, two teeth are gone from a first gear cluster.
Question: What does it take to separate the transmission from the torque tube? We've got the rear end loose from the tracks & tractor and everything unbolted from the torque tube, but it acts like it is still bound up. The parts book does not help much and I don't own a service manual as of today. Any help is appreciated.

To replace the part you are talking about is a complete tear down until the bare transmission is sitting on a bench.
You need to get a service manual before going any further, way too much needed info to not have one.

Torque tube
The parts and service manuals are worth every penny you spend on them.

I third what they say. There is only one way that transmission comes apart and goes back together. It's a jigsaw puzzle. It's not a hard job, but like I said, only one way to get those shafts all in there.

Thanks guys
Hello all. Thanks for the good advice on the service manual. We managed to get it dismantled with some phone support from Nick Dengler, the two-cylinder guru of southwest Ohio, though I can clearly see it will take a service manual, patience, and a pile of parts to put her back together. It appears that the ring gear worked loose earlier in its life and someone welded it fast. The pinion is all chewed up and looks like it had been climbing on the ring gear. We're guessing a chunk of one of these gears made it up into first gear and busted a few teeth out there, causing a definite 'clunk' leading to the teardown.
