420 Axle seal

Post by td14addict » Sat Mar 12, 2016 3:19 pm

I took my left side final drive apart today to change a leaking axle seal and I noticed mine didn't have the proper seal it had 2 "typical" double lipped oil seals in its place. Now what I am wondering is if I can just replace those two seals with 2 more like them or is it necessary to have the proper seal. Mine were leaking, but it seems like they were not the right size to begin with.

Also the axle has been welded up and turned down at some point but only shows 2 thousandths difference from both ends so I don't believe that is the issue. I set it up with a dial indicator on my lathe on 2 live centers.

What is the cost of the proper seal?

Thanks

You can try it, what normally happens is it destroys the outside seal due to lack of lubrication. If you do it, hand pack the cavity between the two seals as much as possible with grease.
