Steering ??/ winter project planning

Post by fogswamp » Thu Sep 07, 2006 5:41 am

Well as the dry weather is nearing an end I'm starting to put a plan together for the dozer. First ?. She doesn't turn right. Pull lever and the brake pulls engine down. Removed the cover at top and see that the bolt that goes in the (cam) shaped groove is gone and appears stripped. What to do? Fogswamp

If you are talking about the rocker arm up top that synchronizes the clutch and brake, that is a 5/16 X 1 1/4 bolt. Get a 5/16 Heli Coil (auto parts stores) thread repair kit. Very carefully and slowly drill out the stripped threads with the size bit that is shown on the kit. The kits comes with every thing except the drill.
Then you use the tap to make new threads, screw the coil in place and you have a new 5/16 threaded hole. Make sure there is enough material around the side to drill and do this, I have not looked that close.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip, do I dare attempt to do that through the inspection cover? FS :o

You would want a very strong vacuum set up so that you do not lose any drill shavings. With care and planning, it could be done.
I would also change the final lube after I did it just to be sure you got anything that may have dropped.
The big issue is making sure there is enough material around the hole to stand the tap pressure. I still have not looked at that.
The alternative of course is to locate one in a dead crawler that is in good shape and replace yours.
