40 C Steering clutch

Post by Wheat47 » Thu Mar 31, 2016 10:32 pm

Hello, all. I've got a 40 C that the left steering clutch is stuck. From the forums here and other places, I'm assuming the fiber plates swelled and I can't push the fingers down any farther. Looking in the inspection plate hole, the fingers are about 1/2" from the throw out bearing. SO, it looks like I'm headed to take off the L.H. track, and get to the clutch pac. Is that right? Also if I have to remove the track, is there a master pin or something? If I have to cut out a pin, can one be machined, or is it special hard material?
Please excuse me, but I haven't taken the time to check for a master pin/link.
Today's problem was to get it started. Boiled down to a corroded battery cable at the starter. Apparently there was enough contact to turn the starter, but no power left for the ignition!! Don't see that too often. Anyway, polished the cable end, the washer, the ignition wire end, and the nut and it started great!!! Now for the steering clutch!!!!
Thanks for any and all suggestions!!!!

There should be a master pin in the track. One end will be kind of a TEE shape, other end will have a snap ring. Should drive out relatively easy. Then take the final off and the clutch will come with it.

Cool. thanks for the quick reply!!!!
Also this is one I bought from you 4-5 years age. It's been a great machine.
Also, there doesn't appear to be any oil in the clutch housing, just kinda rusty. I WILL be making a new gasket for both inspection covers!!!

It is also possible your throwout bearing can be adjusted closer and you won't have to do much. Try that first.

Sounds like it might be worth a try...at least to get it broke loose.

Thanks to all who replied.
I bit the bullet and removed the final drive so I could get to the left clutch pac this afternoon.
Not a bad job at all.
After Studying several posts on this site, it made the job fairly easy.
Thanks, again to all who posted!!
Also getting the parts ordered from Lavoy
