one in waiting

Post by gus » Mon Apr 04, 2016 8:42 pm

I've had a 420 sitting under a tarp for a couple years. Promised the wife a bunch of stuff would get done before I started on it. Walked by it yesterday and had a bad thought. It hasn't been turned over in how long?? Don't have clue how long before I got it and I've never turned it over. Started making me nervous.

Pulled the plugs and shot some WD in the holes. Put a pipe wrench on the front pulley..... Turned right over easy as can be... a real sigh of relief !! Then I pumped a big shot of motor oil in the holes and turned it over a bunch of times to be sure. Plugs back in and I'm not sure when I'll get there, but I feel better now !!

Let's hope it didn't turn over easily because it's so worn out that the rust can't span the gap from the rings to the cylinder walls. LOL

I made a tool to fit the crank socket on my 420, and I leave a big ratchet on it so I can give it a turn when I walk by.

Actually there are 2 sitting out there. One mostly together (the one I turned over) and another all apart and on pallets. Both were bought that way and I haven't gotten to them yet. I oiled the second one but didn't get to turn it over because the flywheel is sitting on the pallet and moved the whole engine, but it I did rock it a little.

Lavoy must be rubbing his hands together by now ready to sell me another bunch of parts!!!

They don't always break free without tear down. Just because they break loose, doesn't mean all is well. Rings may still be stuck to the lands on the pistons and/or the rust has damaged the cylinder walls. Stan, I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know but, I think there are guys without your experience that think once it's turning over, all is good to go.

Hi,

Yes, they can break free and still be in trouble. If it is rings stuck in grooves, then compression will be low and oil will get by. So, pretty easy to figure out.

But, bits of the oil ring like to stay stuck in the bore, making a small ridge. This will cause havoc with the rings in short order. So, it'll start out seemingly OK and then have issues.

That leads to boring the holes and new pistons and rings. If the unit were disassembled in the first place, those leftovers stuck in the bore could be honed out and the pistons cleaned and new rings installed and save a lot of time and money.

Just my two cents worth. ;)
