40 C clutch

Post by Wheat47 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 4:35 pm

Well, I got my clutch all apart. VERY rusty, but is cleaning up pretty easy.
However, it has 7 fiber disc's. I thought it was supposed to have only 6.
Did I miss something?

It may or may not depending on whether it has been updated to later clutch, or somebody just threw an extra part in there thinking they are compensating for wear.

Clutch

Post by Wheat47 » Wed Apr 06, 2016 7:39 pm

I actually loosely assembled it with out one set of disc's but then there was not enough pressure on the unit. I'm sure it would slip.
How do you tell the old pac from the new pac?
By the number of disc's?

Measure thickness of the fiber discs, should be about .155 if newer discs.

Clutch

Post by Wheat47 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 1:30 pm

I just measured the disc's in my steering clutch.
They measured .160 up to .165
I assume they are swelled up.

I know your clutch tool is $25. does that include shipping?
Let me know what ever the cost is, so I can get one ordered from you.
Thank you.

That's way off, something is really odd. Normally hard enough to get 7 in there are .155, can't see how 7 at .165 would fit at all.
No, freight is extra, about $8 I think.

Clutch

Post by Wheat47 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 9:48 pm

Well, when I took the clutch pac apart, all the disc's filled the carrier level full. Before I disassembled the pac, all the fingers on the pressure plate were totally "depressed". There was no room to depress the fingers any more. The throw-out bearing would not get even close to the fingers. As I removed the pressure plate nuts, the fingers came out like they should.
I tried assembling the pac without one fiber disc and one metal disc, but there would not be enough pressure to keep from slipping.
As the I disassembled the pac, the pressure plate and the steel plates looked like they had all been soaked in water for a long time....very rusty!!
However a power buffer took care of all the rust. I'll send you a before pic of one of the steel plates soon.
A question::: Is there a dimension between the pressure plate mounting ears and the carrier BEFORE tightening it down?
I asked the vendor what the thickness of their disc's are and they said "they did not have that dimension"!!
This is the first year I've had any problems with the steering.
Yes, it does set outside. No I have not driven in any deep water or mud or snow. (Nor was it buried under a snow drift.) The inspection cover was firmly attached. So I don't know what brought this on.
By the way, I ordered the fiber disc's from reliableaftermarketpartsinc.
I hope they are "reliable"!!
They said to expect the parts about Apr 15. I'll let you know how things go.
Thanks....
