1010 dozer with bad diesel motor

Post by Robin691 » Thu Apr 07, 2016 8:33 pm

is switching the 1010 diesel motor to a 2010 gas motor possible and is this better than considering rebuilding the 1010 diesel or trying to find a diesel replacement?

1010 dozer bad diesel motor

Post by Robin691 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 10:49 am

The diesel motor starts hard, always have to use glow plugs hot or cold and burns one quart of oil per hour when working the machine. I saw a green 2010 gas tractor and thought the easiest approach would be to purchase the tractor and switch the motor. The asking price was 1900, but hoped I could get it for 1200.

Are you sure the glow plugs are working? The 1010 and 2010 diesels pretty much need working glow plugs to start even in warmer weather.

1010 won't start at 80 degrees without glow plugs, just a fact of life. Factory recommendation is glow plug for 30 seconds in warm weather.
I would assume a tractor had different throttle linkage than a crawler, gas and diesel have different hoods, tractor does not interchange. Not sure that the reverser disc will bolt to 2010 gas tractor flywheel.
The other unknown is how long the drive train will live at the increased power level. I would assume not long.

you might get her back going with new piston and rings, only problem is your engine has a sleeve deck instead of cylinder sleeves.
if the deck is worn and you have cylinder taper...it will.... you will need a new cylinder deck along with new pistons and rings $$$$$$.
I don't know if the sleeve deck can be bored oversize or not....someone else here will have the answer on that.

They DID make over size for 2010 i assume also 1010 but have not been available in years so the answer is YES and NO ..... BUT there are after market decks for 1010 diesel/2010 gas (same one for both)

1010 bad diesel motor

Post by Robin691 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 7:18 pm

The glow plugs are brand new and work well just so frustrating to have to use them every time I go to turn the engine on and off! And the addition of 9 to 10 horsepower of the gas motor doesn't seem like it could be detrimental unless your running the machine balls to the wall, which I am not just a home use machine ie, put a driveway in and say tilling a small garden.
I was just wanting to have a turn key and go machine thinking the gas motor could provide that better than the diesel?
And have rebuilt almost everything on this machine except the motor.
Another thing that crossed my mind was could I eliminate the reverser and somehow tie the drivetrain from the gas tractor to the crawler mechanics?

Another thought do you think a better possibility would be to find a gas 1010 or 2010 crawler motor so the reverser flywheel match won't be an issue or are these type engines like finding hens teeth?

does anyone know a potential parts junkyard where I could find a replacement diesel motor? And or have a spare to take the time to rebuild and then at some point just swap the old one out?
I am about 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Philadelphia so parts closer to this local would be helpful, but I know there is always shipping...

I think Wegner's tractor parts in Myerstown, PA is in your neck of the woods.

You should keep in mind that the diesel will have more pulling power (torque) for the dozer. I find that is an important reason to keep the diesel for this type of equipment Gas might start easier but if you are going to use the unit much at all the diesel is the way to go.
