Gear Grinding

Post by mhobart » Mon Sep 11, 2006 10:09 pm

I have a 5-speed 420c (SN#135,000) that has been helping me plant fence posts for the past few weeks. I’m using an auger attached to the PTO and everything was going fine until I started working longer stretches of time. After a few hours, when I push in the clutch and try to put it into a drive gear or put the PTO into gear, something (the main power shaft?) is still spinning and the only way to get it in gear is to grind it in. When that first started, I just made sure that either the PTO or one of the gears is always engaged. This stops the main drive for a while, but late in the day even that wasn’t working. Even with the PTO engaged, I still couldn’t get any gear to engage cleanly. Once it is finally in gear it goes great.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the engine clutch is sticking, or could be a bad pilot bearing. Check your freeplay, and make sure that you don't have too much.
