Welcome aboard First thing is what sub model if any do you have (550A? B? G? ect) and next you MUST get a service manual for your machine !!!!!! I looked at the parts break down for a 550 torque converter and it is NOT a simple part I would NOT attempt to pull the engine until I read and re-read the book
2010 with 622 dozer with mod. 35 ripper and a 2010 with 622 dozer bought in 1969 and a 2010 loader with drott and mod. 36 ripper

It is a straight 550 no suffix letter. Is there a manual on cd available, have been unable to find one on ebay paper or otherwise. I see no removable plates or access covers to internally disconnect engine from tyranny, but am leary of just removing bellhousing bolt and attempting to get engine out

Joe-

You can find the manual on CD here (not cheap, but available):

https://www.johndeeretechinfo.com/index ... ductSearch
(1) JD Straight 450 crawler dozer with manual outside blade; (2) JD 2010 diesel crawler loaders; (1) JD 2010 diesel dozer with hydraulic 6-way blade; (2) Model 50 backhoe attachments, misc. other construction equipment

I have a 1979ish JD 550 crawler, type 4276TT 01, serial #506373T. I have removed the head and believe i may need to replace. I'm taking it to a machine shop to determine if the old one is too far gone. Anyway, there are 3 numbers in the head cast (R50790; R54560; R57078). Anyone know what these numbers are (alternate part numbers?)? I ask because as a search for a remanufactured/new head, i want to make sure i'm searching for what i need. Also, any ideas on a source for a head? Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Boards.

The current part number for a new head from JD is AR100074. Numbers cast into components may or may not be part numbers, often they are not. The numbers you posted are casting numbers and can be used to identify a used head that could work. Sometimes a given series of engine might use heads with different exterior cooling ports, just as an example, for different applications and the raw castings may have thicker areas where the extra ports are to be machined in. The casting is different, so it gets a different casting number (and part number after it is machined). You can web search using the casting number and will find some sources. There is a good chance the machine shop you take it to may have sources for a head.

You may know this but in case you don't; you can use the John Deere online parts catalogs for free. Here is a link to the parts catalog (PC1437) for the 550. The serial number for your crawler will define the year. Generally, the engine serial numbers aren't as important.

PC1437

If you have questions going forward, you should post on the Late Models Board for your 550. Do you have the Operator's Manual, JD publication # OMT70877, for your 550? The Technical Manual for the 550 is JD publication # TM1108. You should have both if you are doing the engine.

Thank you Jim B.! I appreciate the information and insights. I have a technical manual for the 550, but have found it to be lacking as far as details around repairs. I'll check out the other info sources you mention. Thanks again.
