oil type?
oil type?
Has anyone an opinion on types of oil for an older JD crawler, detergent or not, friction additives? any additives?synthetics? With all the new tech on oils I'm torn between upgrading or sticking with the tried and true 10/W30 plain old oil?Any help on this is,as always much appreciated

Hi,
I have been using JD Torq Gard in the 420c since the late 1960s. That is their 10w30 for the water cooled gas engines (they have a different 10w30, Turf Gard, for the air cooled gas engines and a 15w40, Plus 50, for the diesels).
I stick with it because their additive package is engineered for the particular application, that being low RPM, high torque. Remember half of what is any container of high detergent motor oil is additives engineered for whatever application they are marketing it to.

Thanks Stan, I am unfamiliar with the JD brand, I,ll have to do a little research for the old girl, wait a minute I'm 5 yrs older than her
By the way how do you like the blade on your 420, mine has a loader.

I run a good 10W-30 in any engine I have not been into. Anything I have rebuilt runs 0W-30 Mobil 1 Synthetic. This applies to gas engines only.

What do you mean by "a lot of work" did you fabricate yourself? Thats awesome, what kind of wire feed do you use? I have a stick but am looking for wire feed.
